Netflix And Today’s Endless Buffet Of Streaming Entertainment Are Damaging Our Ability to Think And Analyze

In the past 15 years, one could argue that human beings conquered boredom. It’s hard to believe now, but back in the days of knights and peasants (almost one thousand years ago), soul crushing boredom was a huge part of everyday life. During the winter months, when food was scarce, nights were long and cold, and sources of light were both dangerous and expensive, people literally had nothing to do — either they were sleeping or staring at the walls trying to fall asleep.

Nowadays, we have more shows, movies, and games than time for them. But all this entertainment comes with a cost. While we might never have to worry about being bored again, the increasingly massive amounts of time that we sink into visual entertainment are also damaging our ability to think critically.

What is critical thinking? It’s the ability to sift through evidence, distill the signal from the noise, and use that signal to make a solid decision. It’s a skill that is critical both in business and everyday life.
